For the last 2 years, Neinas Dual Language Academy has been participating in the Cooking Matters nutrition program. The focus here is that cooking healthy foods can be delicious, enjoyable, simple, and affordable.
Last fall, some of our 4th graders took after-school classes once a week, for 6 weeks. They learned how to measure ingredients, use a knife, cook, and avoid injuries while preparing food. All the students I spoke with loved the classes. All participants helped prepare the meal & after each meal was completed, everyone ate together.
“In Cooking Matters, we learned to make new recipes that I liked. The smoothies were good too!” – Dyamond (4th grader)
At the end of the program last fall, students received a cookbook, measuring cups, a cutting board, a chef hat, and a certificate.
“At the end of the program, I started using the recipes they taught us at home. Sometimes, I use the measuring cups and cooking board they gave us at the end of the program. All of the food we made was good. Now my Mom uses the recipes. ” -Evelin (4th grader)
We are pretty excited that this winter, some of our 3rd graders are taking classes after-school on Tuesdays.
In January 2017, a few of our parents signed up for the Cooking Matters program. They come in once a week for classes and seem to be enjoying it. Cooking really does matter in our community!
