Neinas Elementary School A Detroit Public School

About Us

The Neinas Tradition: Educating the Student While Servicing the Families and Our Community Since 1916

Neinas, a Neighborhood-Centered, Quality PreK-7 School located in vibrant Southwest Detroit, offers a rigorous elementary curriculum and solid pathway to high school.

Neinas’ students follow lesson plans that focus on the rigorous Common Core State Standards. The school’s teachers incorporate technology throughout their daily lessons to better prepare students for the real world.

Because Neinas also believes in educating the “whole child,” Neinas provides students many offerings outside of the core course offerings, including a Music program led by a certified teacher, Robotics, and Art classes integrated into the standard curriculum.

Neinas offers small classes to ensure individualized attention, and all students have individualized learning plans tailored to their specific learning needs.

The school staff uses a data-driven approach to ensuring students’ learning needs are met, including assessments like Data Directory, MClass and MAP, M-Step, Renaissance Learning, Accelerated Reading and Math, WIDA and MI-Access. The school building’s walls are lined with class data to simulate “Data Walls” which help Neinas teachers to regularly assess students’ academic achievement. Data analysis is followed up with regular teacher observations.

Because Neinas has been named a Priority School by the State of Michigan School Office of Reform, The school also offers FREE after-school tutoring, small group instruction for students.

Neinas also offers a state-approved Pre-Kindergarten program to fully prepare students for kindergarten. The program incorporates child-directed learning to foster a love of learning but also uses structured lessons that include pre-writing and foundations in math, science and social studies.

Highly-qualified, Highly-Experienced Staff

Our highly-qualified teachers have been teaching for more than 15 years, on average, bringing a depth of experience to our school. Teachers respect the students and encourage higher order thinking. All auxiliary staff members present a customer-oriented attitude when parents call, stop in the office, or ask for help in the hallways.

Neinas is focused on partnerships that help build academic success. The school has a partnership with reporters from Bloomberg who work with Neinas students to improve their writing and research. Other partners include Forgotten Harvest, Bridgepointe, Pathways to Potential and Neighborhood Legal Services.

Parent and Family Engagement Matter to Us

Neinas has an investment in our parents and families because we know that students excel when parents are more engaged in their children’s learning. We have an open door policy, and parents are encouraged to talk to teachers regularly, which helps our students stay on track. Neinas has a parent room, where parents are able to receive resource help as well as connect with bilingual staff for assistance. We also offer use of our library’s computers to our parents.

We engage and welcome parents through:

  • School Clean Up
  • Literacy programs
  • Open houses
  • Community garden
  • Activities and programs in our school, as well as our area City Park
  • Parent volunteerism opportunities
  • Parent workshops
  • PACSA monthly meetings
